How do I set up an IRS payment plan online?

Determine Your Eligibility

You can apply for a long-term payment plan (installment agreement) if you owe $50,000 or less in combined tax, penalties, and interest and have filed all required returns. For a short-term payment plan, you must owe less than $100,000.

Gather Necessary Information

Prepare your personal details such as your name, email address, home address, birth date, filing status, and Social Security number or ITIN. Additionally, have your bank routing and account numbers ready if you plan to set up direct debit payments.

Create an IRS Online Account

If you don't already have an account, you'll need to create one on the IRS website IRS.gov/payments. This process requires a photo ID and a mobile device for identity verification through ID.me.

Access the Online Payment Agreement Tool

Go to the IRS payment plan portal at irs.gov/payments and use the Online Payment Agreement tool to apply for your payment plan. Follow the prompts to complete your application.

Review and Submit Your Application

After filling out the necessary information and selecting your payment options (including whether to use direct debit), review your application for accuracy and submit it. You will receive confirmation of your application status from the IRS.

Pay Setup Fees

Be aware that there may be setup fees associated with your payment plan. For online applications, the fee is typically $69 for long-term plans; however, there is no fee for short-term plans.
